Mont St. Michel in Normandy, France, inspired our castle in “Tangled.” It sits out in the bay surrounded by water and feels so very fairy tale-like. When I visited it I knew this has to be the kingdom that Rapunzel will someday be Queen of. -GLEN KEANE
Comparison of concept art by Lisa Keene (left) and The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1766). The concept art shows how the art direction changed over the course of the film from something more “artistic” to something more in line with traditional animation.
My best attempt to place the fashions in “Tangled” into certain eras. I did the same for the Palace Guards a while ago. Special thanks to The Story of a Seamstress for her help!
God help me, I think I’m becoming a Royals lover.
Clearing out some old projects never posted… Saw this when I was doing research to date the clothing styles in “Tangled.” The historical image is of a British soldier.

I love historical art, and I couldn’t help comparing this image of Lindau, Germany, with the Corona bridge.
The photos are from Stralsund, Germany, a Baltic Sea port on an island that gives a sense of what a real-world island-village of Corona might have looked like. The art is concept art from the excellent companion book, “The Art of Tangled.”
This photo shows some of the similarities between Corona and Lübeck, a Baltic Sea port in Germany. Germany’s Baltic Sea coast is a leading candidate for where a real-world Kingdom of Corona might have been located. (Read more here.)
You base whatever you’ve got in reality. We were thinking of Central Europe - what trees grow there? We researched what the major types of forests were in Eastern Germany, Poland, and Hungary. We kept to oak, hornbeam, and beech because of the shapes. We wanted soft lines. -DOUG ROGERS, DESIGNER
The photos are of a beech forest I recently visited on Rügen, a German island in the Baltic Sea.

The Google doodle of the royal wedding: London or Corona? I think I spend too much time looking at “Tangled” concept art… (See Google, on Friday at least.)
