This Corona map and corresponding concept art show three things that were in a previous draft of “Tangled” but never made it into the original film:
(1) A gondola ride though the village canal
(2) Rapunzel meeting Gothel at the Lost Princess memorial
(3) A wedding at the castle cathedral
This is a companion map to my story, “The House of Korona.” It shows all the locations mentioned in the story, including the Kingdom. The full map shows the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. The inset shows a more detailed view of Gdansk Bay and the Kingdom. The date of the map is 1739.
These maps show the tendency of Hanseatic cities on the Baltic Sea in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to build on islands. The fact that the Corona village is on an island (and that the flag of Corona has a ship on it) adds further credence to the idea that a real-world island-village might have been a small Hanseatic port.
You know what I love about this: It is a map of the real world. It’s like the creators are saying: “Go ahead, imagine that this actually happened.” Hence, this entire Tumblr blog. What I desperately want to know is: What is Rapunzel telling Flynn about Sumatra and the Indian Ocean? The spice trade? Elephants? Good coffee?
If only this showed more than the entry gate and fountain square! The canal appeared to be a major part of an earlier script. Rapunzel and Flynn were going to take their gondola ride through that canal, Venice-style, it seems. So far as I can tell, the carriage road goes off to the harbor, where there are docks and several larger merchant-type buildings. And I’m drying to know what the “park” is on the far right.
Being a frustrated cartographer, I love this. It looks like it comes from a previous version of the script. For one, Rapunzel and Flynn didn’t take such a straight route to the castle. For another, the quay area is very different. And look! They point out the castle cathedral. Was there originally a marriage scene?
I love this map from the end credits. Not as informative as this one, perhaps. But much more style.
This basic map of Gdynia shows the hills rising behind the harbor.
This modern map gives a sense of the relation of Wiezyca (underlined in lower left) and the Kashubian Lake District to Gdynia (underlined middle right), with a scale at the top. Gdansk is in the lower right.
Here’s a map of the part of the Kashubian Lake District near Wiezyca, which I’ve marked on the far right. Insert rickety dam here.
